Moskovsky worked for nearly four decades as an educator. After completing his undergraduate degree he was appointed as an English instructor at one of Sofia's suburban high schools, where he remained for a year. Then he was able to gain a competitive position at the now extinct Institute for Foreign Languages in Sofia, which was a good career step forward. During his tenure at the Institute Moskovsky acquired some experience in the field of applied linguistics (which would prove rather valuable in later years).
Shortly after finishing his doctoral program in 1997, Moskovsky was offered a contract position as an academic literacy lecturer at the University of Newcastle's Centre for Teaching and Learning. A major career breakthrough occurred with the opening of a lectureship at Newcastle University's then Department of Linguistics. Moskovsky applied and was selected from among several other candidates from around the country. He remained in this position until his retirement in 2021.
As it turned out, the new position was specifically created for the intended launch of a new postgraduate program in applied linguistics. This required a radical shift in Moskovsky's research orientation—away from its current focus on theoretical syntax. Instead he channeled all of his efforts into building the new applied linguistics program, which he subsequently ran successfully for over 20 years.
In addition to the coursework Master of Applied Linguistics, Moskovsky also developed the popular doctoral program in applied linguistics which was strongly sought after, mostly by international candidates. During the course of his tenure Moskovsky personally trained scores of masters and PhD students representing a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. On a number of occasions he was recognized for his teaching excellence.
Moskovsky also spearheaded a prolific research program in applied linguistics investigating cognitive and psychological aspects of second/foreign language acquisition. He has authored and co-authored several monographs and multiple academic papers in some of the highest ranked journals in this field. A selected list of his academic publications is provided elsewhere on this website. The impact of Moskovsky's research is in part reflected in the number of citations it has attracted.
