Departure (Заминаване), a semi-autobiographical novel, published by Bulgarian Bestseller (Български Бестселър) in 2022.
Departure was only published in 2022, although the idea of the book was conceived probably two decades earlier and much of the book was written quite a few years before its publication. Moskovsky's experience as an active participant in the democratization processes in Bulgaria after the collapse of Soviet socialism in Central and Eastern Europe left such a deep mark in his soul that he felt a compelling need to tell his story.
The year is 1989. The Soviet empire is crumbling and the Eastern Europe nations, including Bulgaria, are in the throes of a powerful democratization process inexorably pulling them away from “Mother” Russia’s deadly embrace. It is a time of grand civic upheaval, of monumental social, cultural and political transformations, a period of considerable shift in individual and national mentality, a freeing of people’s minds—a sort of modern-day renaissance.
Departure describes these turbulent times through the eyes of an ordinary Bulgarian – a man in his 30s with a young family. It is a tale of excitement, joy and optimism, of the aspirations which the start of these transformations generated in many people. Alas, it is also a tale of dashed hopes and disappointment, of efforts to make sense of a situation in which often nothing made much sense. Ultimately, it is a tale of trying to achieve personal happiness during an extraordinarily turbulent, confusing and unsettled time.
More broadly, this book is about the disruptive effects that large-scale social and political changes have on the lives of ordinary people, often compelling them to make life choices which they otherwise would not have made.
Departure is one of few works of fiction providing a literary (but also historically accurate) account of a piece of turbulent history in this part of the world.
An English translation of the book is now available via Amazon.
The Lucky Country: Reflections and Reminiscences of a Long-Term Immigrant, published by Connor Court in 2022.
What does Australia look like to a complete newcomer? What are Australia's people like—nice or naughty, friendly or hostile, generous or stingy? What are Australia's social and cultural norms, and what are her politics?
Several decades ago Christo Moskovsky was this complete newcomer and since then he has been trying to answer questions like these. This book contains Moskovsky's impressions, observations and insights generated over the course of his Australian journey, as well as a broader commentary on social, cultural and political aspects of life in Australia. It is specifically Moskovsky's pre-Australian life experience which affords him a unique vantage point and a greater capacity to appreciate the true greatness of Australia.
This book is a portrait of Australia painted by a first-generation immigrant offering a perspective that we do not commonly see in Australia's public discourse.
Find the Best Opening Lead in Bridge: A book of opening lead problems
Opening leads are widely recognised as one of the trickiest elements of bridge. The opening leader is at a strong disadvantage, because the information available at the time of the opening lead is severely limited. No bridge player has been spared the exasperation of realizing they have made an inadequate opening lead, often enabling the opposition to make an otherwise unmakeable contract. Poor opening leads perhaps cost more tricks than any other aspect of the game.
This book is a practical guide to opening leads designed as a resource to help beginners and intermediate bridge players improve their skill at this challenging aspect of the game.
